TPEX-S Current Status and Future Trends of Power Generation in Europe

The European Union has committed itself to ambitious targets regarding the reduction of greenhouse gas emission thus leading to stringent decarbonization targets in the energy sector. In this presentation the expected development of the power generation system in Europe and Germany in particular are highlighted. The decarbonization of the power sector is leading to a dramatic change in the technology mix and especially the operation mode of conventional power stations.

Oliver Then started his professional career in 1991 in the generation arm of a leading European utility and worked in different power stations and on different positions within the headquarters. For more than 10 years he served in the new build project group and the projects in which he and his team have been involved covered the full range of size, technology and fuels either in Germany and on European sites. In October 2013 Oliver Then joined VGB PowerTech e.V. in Essen, the International Association for the generation and storage of power and heat being responsible for Power Plant and Environmental Technologies covering all aspects of conventional power plants and over-arching technical disciplines for nuclear and renewable generation as well as environmental issues. Since 01 April 2018 he was appointed Executive General Manager of VGB PowerTech e.V. as well as its service company PTS GmbH and the VGB Research Foundation.
