This presentation gives an overview about powertrain technologies to reduce CO2 emissions of powertrains which contain an internal combustion engine, to reduce the share of fossil fuels and to finally achieve zero CO2 emissions with battery or fuel cell electric vehicles. The different aspects of these technologies are discussed and it is shown that we need a mix of these technologies and a technology neutral approach to achieve the target of carbon neutrality.

Dr. Markus Wabro studied electrical engineering at the University of Stuttgart and received his PhD from the University of Ulm for his research in microelectronics.
He joined Bosch in 1995 and held various positions in engineering, quality and project management for semiconductors, Airbag and engine control units and powertrain components in Germany, Japan and China.
Currently he is responsible for system engineering and for powertrain electrification within Powertrain Solutions Japan.

The automotive industry is entering a time of transformation regarding E/E architecture and vehicle development approach in recent years.
In the past, the mainstream was a distributed architecture with a hardware-driven development approach, in which software was defined and managed separately for each function.
However, with the sophistication of software functions such as ADAS/autonomous driving and connected features, the increase in load of development and quality assurance became a problem. Therefore, automotive companies are shifting to a software-driven development approach based on domain or zonal E/E architecture. By realizing a domain/zonal architecture through software-driven development, companies can not only reduce the development load, but also achieve product improvement from easier functional updates. Automotive companies who are able to push forward the new development method would be presented greater opportunities to become game changers of the industry.
For Japanese automotive and mobility industries, it is worth considering how to promote collaboration with the IT industry actively in preparation for the upcoming challenges. This presentation will consist of latest updates on OEMs and new players globally while unravelling the outlook of the industry with insights into the Japanese automotive industry.

<Speaker Profile>

Lei specializes in industries related to automotive/ICT/electronics/mobility services. While based in Tokyo, he has worked in projects across several countries including the U.S., Europe, China, and India. He has experiences in all aspects of consulting from upstream projects - such as those related to corporate, technology, and overseas business development strategy; to downstream operations such as constructing detailed business management systems. Lei has a Ph.D. in economics. He is fluent in English and Japanese, and is native in Chinese.

As a data scientist at IBM Japan, Ltd., Norihiko Nakabayashi supported customer data analysis in various aspects,and solved diverse problems faced by companies from the perspective of data and data analysis. He then joined Yamato Holdings Co., Ltd. in August 2019 after working as Deputy Director of Data Science Lab, OPT Holding, inc. and Chief Data Scientist of Sompo Holdings, Inc. At Yamato Holdings Co., Ltd., he became Operating Officer in March 2020, and then Operation Officer at Yamato Transport Co., Ltd. in April 2021. He plays a role in building and executing a data strategy to maximize the utilization of data, which has become an important management resource, across the group. He also works on human resource development that will be an immediate workforce for companies in data science as a visiting associate professor at the Graduate School of University of Tsukuba and a director of the Japan DataScientist Society.
