At this very moment, automobiles are undergoing a major evolution.
It is no exaggeration to say that a car with high-performance chips, intelligent driving capabilities, and easy-to-use infotainment features is like a "computer on wheels".
As advanced driver assistance system and autonomous driving gain more popularity in the future, time and energy spent on manual driving will be reduced and even eliminated, allowing the driver and riders to enjoy their free time inside the car as it drives itself. In some cases, the space inside the car will be drastically renewed, including the elimination of the driver's seat and changes in seating orientation.
With the computerization of cars, increased in-car free time, and more spacious interior, activities that used to be done only at home or in the office can now can be done in the car, and the boundaries between inside and outside the car will somehow melt away in near future.
Leaders in this evolutionary era of auto industry will be those emerging technology-driven automakers or players from other industries. They are looking for opportunities to win the battle of users' in-car time by leveraging their deep understanding of users and ability to provide value that is not bound by traditional thinking.
In this presentation, we will discuss the in-car experience in the era of "computer on wheels" from both the customers' needs and the emerging technology perspectives. Then we will cover topics such as the keys to achieve an engaging and enjoyable in-car experience, as well as the steps that Japanese companies should take in the future.

Since their introduction, Silicon Carbide (SiC) products have enabled car electrification by improving efficiency, cutting heat waste, and reducing size and weight of power electronics. These factors are enticing customers by delivering longer driving ranges -- and therefore reducing range anxiety -- while at the same time allowing faster charging. Making SiC products in automotive-grade versions since bringing them into the market has been a big challenge that is paying off. The latest STPOWER GEN3 MOSFETs exhibit unrivalled low conduction and switching losses and are fully debugged in the harsh environments for the traction inverter, OBC, and DC-DC converters, as well as in the charging stations that constitute the backbone of the EV ecosystem.
Filippo Di Giovanni is currently Strategic Marketing, Innovation and Key Programs Manager for wide band gap and power modules at ST Italy. Dr. Di Giovanni's experience and expertise covers silicon-based power transistors to silicon carbide and gallium nitride. He attends numerous conferences and workshops dedicated to power conversion and car electrification.
