IEA special report in May 2021 was the world s first comprehensive study of how to transition to a net zero energy system by 2050. The report also examined key uncertainties, such as the roles of bioenergy, carbon capture and behavioural changes in reaching net zero.
Brent Wanner is the Head of the Power Sector Unit for the World Energy Outlook (WEO) at the International Energy Agency IEA. Most recently, he was a lead author and co-ordinator of the report Net Zero by 2050 A Roadmap for the Global Energy Sector. He led the electricity modelling and analysis for World Energy Outlook 2020, the IEA Sustainable Recovery report and 2020 Global Energy Review, and co-directed the IEA Offshore Wind Outlook 2019.

Bart Biebuyck is Executive Director of the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen 2 Joint Undertaking (FCH2 JU) since 2016. Before FCH JU he was part of the Fuel Cell department of Toyota Motor Europe where he held the position of Technical Senior Manager. He has been working on deployment of new technologies in the European market and also worked in Toyota Motor Cooperation in Japan for two years. The Executive Director is the legal representative of the FCH JU. The Executive Director and the Program Office are in charge of the day-to-day management of the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking.

Kurt-Christoph von Knobelsdorff is the Managing Director of NOW, the National Organisation for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies of the Federal Government in Germany. In his speech he will provide an overview of the evolving regulatory framework in Europe regarding climate policies as well as hydrogen and water electrolysis in particular. He will also share insights into the planned climate policies of the new Federal Government that took office in late 2021, and how hydrogen may evolve as part of that. In line with the focus of NOW's main activities, Mr. Knobelsdorff will then present the current status and outlook on hydrogen mobility in Germany. Finally, he will highlight the importance of international cooperation and how NOW is supporting that.
Kurt-Christoph von Knobelsdorff is a graduate economist and, following professional positions at the Association of the German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) and the German Association of Family Businesses, he held senior positions in the Berlin Senate and the Ministry of Economic Affairs in Schleswig-Holstein. Before joining NOW GmbH as Managing Director, he was Head of Department at the Brandenburg Ministry of Energy.
With its coordination of federal government programmes, political consulting and networking at the interface of politics, industry, municipalities and science, NOW GmbH makes a major contribution to achieving the climate objectives to which Germany has committed itself.

Dr. Sunita Satyapal will provide an overview of the US Department of Energy's hydrogen and fuel cell research, development and demonstration activities including the H2@scale vision and the Hydrogen Energy Earthshot of $1 per 1 kilogram of clean hydrogen in one decade.
Dr. Sunita Satyapal is the Director for the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office and coordinates activities across offices for the U.S. DOE Hydrogen Program. She is responsible for more than $150 million per year in hydrogen and fuel cell research, development, demonstration, and deployment activities. She has two and a half decades of experience across industry, academia, and government, including at United Technologies managing research and business development, and as a visiting professor. She also coordinates across international hydrogen activities and is currently Vice-Chair of the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy, a partnership among over 20 countries to accelerate progress in hydrogen, and she serves as co-lead for hydrogen efforts within the Clean Energy Ministerial and Mission Innovation. She received her Ph.D. from Columbia University and did postdoctoral work in Applied and Engineering Physics at Cornell University.
She has numerous publications, including in Scientific American, 10 patents, and a number of recognitions including a Presidential Rank Award.

Honda has positioned hydrogen/fuel cell technology as an important future technology for realizing a low-carbon society as a measure against global warming, and has been developing fuel cell vehicle (FCV) from an early stage. In 2002, it launched the world's first FCV, and launched a sedan Type FCV in 2008 and FCV that fuel cell system is installed under engine hood in 2016. Currently, it is co-developed with GM for the next one. Although performance issues have been predicted, efforts such as cost reduction and quality assurance of fuel cell stack remain as barriers in case of mass production. This presentation summarizes the technical issues of FCV development and explains the possibilities for various applications. At the same time, FCV will be explained not only as a means of transportation but also as a means of contributing to various social unrests that are currently occurring.

Having completed diploma and PhD studies of physics in Germany and France, Christian Mohrdieck began his professional career 1989 in research at Daimler-Benz AG in Frankfurt. After heading the R&T Executive Board Office in Stuttgart, he was responsible for Fuel Cell Systems at DaimlerChrysler Corporation in the USA. Back in Germany, Christian Mohrdieck became Head of Structural Materials at Daimler-Chrysler Research. From 2005 to 2012 he led the Fuel Cell and Li-Ion battery R&D at Daimler. Since 2012 Christian Mohrdieck has been Head of Fuel Cell at the Daimler Group and CEO of NuCellSys GmbH since 2015.
Being a Honorary Professor, he teaches at the University of Ulm and the Technical University of Vienna.

Lithium argyrodite-type solid electrolytes are expected to be applied to a variety of market fields because of their excellent properties not only in ionic-conductivity but also in formability and thermal stability. In this talk, the features, battery properties, and future prospects of small-sized all-solid-state batteries using argyrodite-type solid electrolyte will be presented.
In April 1996, Masayuki Yamada joined Hitachi Maxell, Ltd. (currently Maxell, Ltd.), where he started his carrier as a member of R&D of new materials for phosphors and batteries. After transferred to Energy Division in 2011, he was engaged in design and development of lithium-ion batteries with high energy density and successfully commercialized high-performance batteries such as prismatic lithium-ion batteries using a SiO negative-electrode. He has obtained a Ph.D from Osaka City University under the supervision of Prof. Tsutomu Ohzuku in 2013. From 2016, he was responsible for new battery development including all-solid-state batteries, and since 2021, he has been a development director of all-solid-state batteries in New Business Produce Division.

For the resource circulation system for lithium-ion batteries, I review the overall issues such as diagnosis, transportation, reuse, and recycling, and the issues in each process such as dismantling, roasting, and separation in recycling. I also introduce our research to develop a novel separation technology.

With the evolution of battery technology, the electrification of mobility is progressing. Just as the spread of ICE vehicles was combined with the expansion of the oil supply network, the spread of electric mobility cannot be advanced by vehicle development alone. Through this seminar, we will consider the prospects for mobility electrification by quoting the results of the demonstration project that Honda has carried out.

Opportunities for solar power business are to be discussed, which are expected to be expanded going forward to achieve greenhouse gas emissions reduction target for 2030. While FiP scheme will be introduced in 2022, non-FiT projects such as merchant and offsite power purchase agreements have recently gained attentions, resulting in more renewable generators to be integrated and participated in wholesale electricity market.
Prior to founding Renewable Japan Co Ltd in 2012, Mr. Manabe was CEO of ZAIS Japan Limited, a Japanese subsidiary of an U.S. asset management company, where during his 4-year tenure, he shared responsibility for various businesses including overseas solar projects. Prior to ZAIS Japan, Mr. Manabe served as Chief of Headquarters of Financial Corporate Sales Business of Barclays Securities Japan Limited from 2005 to 2008. Mr. Manabe began his career with Lehman Brothers Japan Inc in 1991.
Mr. Manabe holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts.

A major achievement has been the joint project to design the world's first hybrid-spar floating wind turbine platform, which was installed in 2013, making it Japan's first and the world's third commercial-scale floating offshore wind power facility. The evaluation and feasibility of the plant were completed and started commercial operation in March 2016. Since 2018, he is Senior Director at the Ocean Renewable Energy Division and has been responsible for driving and disseminating technological developments for decarbonization.

Kotaro Shimizu completed his Master of Science degree from Waseda University, Japan, in 2002. He joined UFJ Research Institute (present organization: Mitsubishi UFJ Research and Consulting), a policy institute in Japan, as an analyst of environment and energy field in that year, was promoted to the chief analyst of the resource and energy field in 2010 and is working as the general manager of Sustainable Society Department. He is also appointed the expert of ISO/TC298 (Rare Earth) from 2017, the vice president of Rare Earth Industry Association from 2019, the expert of ISO/TC323 (Circular Economy) from 2020, the committee member of Mining Subcommittee, Advisory Committee for Natural Resources and Energy, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Japan from 2021, and the director of Circular Economy Association from 2021.

David Hochschild was appointed chair of the California Energy Commission by Governor Newsom in 2019. Over the years, he has been widely recognized for his work to advance clean, renewable energy. In 2001 he launched a citywide $100 million solar panel initiative in San Francisco. He cofounded the Vote Solar Initiative, served as executive director of a national consortium of solar manufacturers, worked at Solaria, and is a former commissioner at the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission.

Prior to taking up the Chairship of the Air Resources Board, she served as a Commissioner at the California Public Utilities Commission, as Deputy Secretary and General Counsel at the California Natural Resources Agency, and as Chair of the California Fair Political Practices Commission.

In recent years, global actions for building a climate finance architecture are progressing at a warp speed. It will be discussed in this session how the Financial Services Agency of Japan is addressing this rapid development.
In March 2019, the Financial Services Agency of Japan (JFSA) decided to create the position of Chief Sustainable Finance Officer (CSFO), to plan and coordinate on promotion of sustainable finance internally and globally. Upon its creation he was appointed, and has been serving, as the first CSFO. In this capacity, he covers a wide range of issues concerning sustainable finance which include, among other things, promoting TCFD disclosures in Japan by business corporations and financial institutions. He also served as Co-chair of the Workstream on Climate Disclosures of the FSB SRC and currently serves as Co-chair of the Workstream on ESG Data and Ratings of the IOSCO Sustainability Taskforce as well as Co-chair of the Working Group on Sustainability Disclosure of the IPSF.
